Flip Up Style Dental Loupes

What is a Dental Loupe?

dental loupesA dental loupe is a magnifying device used by dentists to better visualize the entities within oral cavities in order to better diagnose, for example, to determine how far a crack proceeds along the surface of a tooth. Dental loupes are also used in order to perform on a more precise level; while dentists drill teeth on a millimeter scale, magnification can enlarge the dentists' view of the teeth, perhaps making it easier to inspect teeth for decay and/or see things that ordinarily would not be seen without magnification. Because dentists use both of their hands while performing dental procedures, dental loupes are binocular and usually take on the form of a pair of glasses.

Flip Style Loupes

The Flip Up Dental Loupes consists of two small cylinders, one in front of each lens of the glasses providing the dental practitioner with the unbeatable combination of a wide viewing area and a large amount of magnification. The hinge system features a direct vertical adjustment that improves line of sight viewing and maximizes the viewing area by keeping the loupes closer to the eye than just a 2 hinge flip system.

The lower hinge sets the downward tilt of the loupes. Setting a steeper angle in combination with choosing the correct working range gives the user a comfortable upright working position.

Performance Adjustments for Flip Up Dental Loupe Optics:

  • Vertical — Raise or lower the hinge assembly until Flip Up Loupe optics are properly aligned to the eyes. Optics should remain in contact with the lenses - This ensures the largest possible field of vision.
  • Downward Angle / Angle of Declination — This adjustment allows the operator to maintain his or her normal and comfortable working posture and ensures viewing through the center of the Flip Up Loupe’s telescope.
  • Interpupillary — This horizontal adjustment allows for precise alignment of the optics to the center of each eye.
  • Positioning - All hinges are torque set to allow adjustments to “stay” once they are set.

Why do dentists use a Flip Style Dental Loupe?

Having ample light is an important part of performing precision dentistry. Because a dentist's head often eclipses the overhead dental headlamp, flip style dental loupes may be fitted with a light source. This light source, emanating from in front of the loupes, cannot be blocked by the position of the dentists' head, and so provides for a continuous source of light during the extent of dental procedures. Flip style dental loupe mounted lights used to be fed by fiber optic cables that connected to either a wall-mounted or table-top light source, and often introduces a limiting range for the dentist, as he or she would be required to remain close to the wall or table, respectively. Additionally, the fiber optic cord could be damaged by excess flexing or crushing, such as would occur should the cord be rolled over by a chair.

Newer models feature an LED lamp within the flip-style-loupe mounted light and an electric cord coming from either the conventional wall-mounted/table-top light source or a belt clip rechargeable battery pack. There are also options for flip-style-loupe mounted cameras and video recorders new to the market.

With just a few adjustments, the Q-Optics 2.5x Flip Style dental loupes easily line up to the eye and are ready for work in just minutes.
